ArcelorMittal Tubarão, choses again Danieli to revamp its slab casters

Brazilian steelmaker orders major revamping of caster #2 located in Serra, Brazil.

The project includes the complete replacement of all molds, oscillators and segments with the latest design of such equipment from Danieli, renovation of worn structures and a completely new caster maintenance area. The objective of this revamping and the technological update of Dynamic Soft Reduction (DSR) is to improve plant flexibility, product quality, plant productivity and reduce conversion costs.

The two-strand continuous slab caster #2 was originally installed in 1998 and is a vertical-curved design. The machine radius is around 9 meters and the containment length is approximately 35 m. The caster produces slabs of 200/225/250 mm thick with widths ranging from 1050 to 2,100 mm, and will be able to reach 2,300 mm width. Steel grades produced include ultra-low, low, medium and high carbon steels, peritectic and HSLA steels and micro alloyed steels.

The revamped slab caster will be equipped with the latest technological packages supplied by Danieli, including:
· Q-LEVEL+ proactive automatic mold level control system
· Q-WIDTH automatic mold width adjustment
· Q-INMO+ hydraulically actuated mold oscillator with rolling element technology
· Q-COOL dynamic secondary cooling with independent width control
· Q-CORE and Q-PULSE dynamic soft reduction, hydraulically controlled via position transducer
· Q-OPTIMUM and Q-ROLL segment design for easy maintenance, process flexibility, high reliability, including automatic gap control and air/oil lubrication to bearings
· HI-PROFILE advanced on line slab inspection system

Danieli will be responsible for the design and supply of the complete slab caster, including Danieli Automation Level 1 and interface with existing Level 2 automation systems; it will also provide advisory services during erection and commissioning.

Start-up is expected in the second quarter of 2019 with on-site project execution within 60 days of outage in parallel with a blast furnace shut down.

Slab caster #1 in the same steel plant, was also revamped by Danieli in 2012.
